Originally a site of profound sorrow due to the tragic abduction and murder of Shalonda Poole, the park has been lovingly transformed into a vibrant sanctuary of memory and beauty.

Why Attend?

This intimate and personal event offers attendees the opportunity to deeply connect with the history of Warnersville, Greensboro's first Heritage Community. Recognized in 2015, Warnersville holds a special place in local history as the first planned African American community in the area, established by Pennsylvania Quaker Yardley Warner in 1865. Warner purchased and divided over 35 acres of land just south of Greensboro, making them available to freedmen. This event highlights the community's historical significance and celebrates its cultural heritage, making it a meaningful experience for all who attend.

About the Garden:

The Ancestral Garden commemorates the Warnersville community and the memory of Shalonda Poole. Over 150 glow-in-the-dark butterfly sculptures, inspired by Shalonda’s love for butterflies, symbolize transformation and hope. Acrylic panels featuring photographs of significant figures and places from Warnersville's past enrich the narrative, providing a powerful visual connection to the community's rich heritage.

Guided historical walks, interactive talks, and community engagement. Note: This event will focus on personal interaction and historical reflection without live performances.

Educational Contribution and Labor:

Students from the A&T Department of Agriculture Landscape & Design have played a significant role in the creation of the garden. Typically focused on design, these students embraced the hands-on opportunity to engage in the physical labor involved in creating the garden, gaining invaluable real-world experience and contributing to a meaningful community project.
